Contested Commensuration: The case of a valuation instrument for historical buildings

Environmental values are becoming increasingly important in restoration of historical buildings, while energy interventions can seriously damage historical qualities. Cultural-historical values and environmental values are often considered difficult to commensurate, with energy engineers and heritage experts adhering to widely differing values and relating to different discourses. Valuation instruments are devised to deal with such value conflicts in restoration projects. In this article we study what such instruments perform in the case of assessing historical buildings. We ask how these instruments work, and how they afford, support and guide valuation processes? Furthermore, we enquire what is achieved and what is lost in the reconciliation of values. Theoretically, we start from the notion of commensuration, which allows comparison of values through a shared metric. Empirically, this research note examines the history and use of DuMo, an instrument that aims to reconcile cultural – historical and environmental values and provides a range of sustainable restoration strategies. We find that DuMo indeed performs commensuration of these conflicting values, but also keeps intact the epistemic authority of the two professions. Our claim thus is that valuation instruments can successfully perform commensuration while at the same being contested by involved professionals.

The use of augmented reality for renovation of cultural heritage sites

Augmented reality is an innovative technology that merges the virtual and real worlds to create a unique interactive experience for users. Although the technology only became widely known in the mid-2000s, its potential and applications continue to evolve rapidly, especially with the advent of smartphones and other mobile devices that allow a wide range of users to interact with augmented reality in their everyday lives. In the field of cultural heritage and tourism, augmented reality opens up new opportunities for the restoration and presentation of historical buildings and places that no longer exist or have been altered by time, giving visitors the opportunity to see and experience the historical environment in its original form. However, to effectively use augmented reality in this area, it is necessary to ensure an exact correspondence between virtual objects and the real environment, as well as to implement navigation functions that will help users easily navigate the virtually restored space. Developing and implementing augmented reality solutions requires not only technological expertise but also a deep understanding of the historical, cultural and social context of the objects being recreated. Based on our research, we have developed a concept of an augmented reality application for the reconstruction and promotion of cultural heritage. This includes methods for accurately recreating historical locations and objects in a virtual environment, as well as developing intuitive navigation tools for users. The main achievement of the work is the creation of a foundation for the further development of augmented reality technologies in this area, with a focus on improving the interaction between virtual and real components, which will help increase audience engagement and raise awareness of historical and cultural heritage. This opens up broad prospects for the use of augmented reality for cultural heritage, and the proposed approaches can serve as a basis for future innovative projects in this area.

Comparison of Retro Marketing in the Heritage building case studies: M Bloc Space and the Pos Bloc Space in Jakarta, Indonesia

The renovation of historic buildings in Jakarta now has a new approach by including youth programs. In the Post Bloc building, the central concept is that young people still remember the presence of the Post office. In the former Peruri official residence building, the Blok M area where the M Bloc space building is located can add to the lives of young people. A marketing business approach is also included so businesses that occupy this historic building can sell well. Namely the retro marketing approach. This paper will discuss two retro marketing approaches for these new youth places, M-Bloc Space and Pos Bloc in Jakarta. The Data is collected by surveying and interviewing; they draw and digitalize it to analyze both buildings well. The Research Methodology used is Qualitative, with case studies comparison. This paper aims to know the retro Marketing ideal in heritage buildings to make Adaptive reuse inside sustainable. In conclusion, this paper is expected to be useful for other cities to revive historical areas and facilities in their cities with a business approach imitating the success of M Bloc Space and Pos Bloc Space.

Modern requirements for energy-efficient renovation of historical buildings

Мodern urban development trends includes the importance of taking historical buildings into account when implementing sustainable development strategies. Energetic modernization of historical buildings has both economic and social benefits. Buildings of historical importance often do not correspond to the requirements of modern directives, but the use of certain technical means and architectural practices allows to achieve a significant increase in energy potential. Energy-efficient renovation of historic buildings is an important component in the formation of future smart cities, since historic buildings themselves connect society with the heritage of the past and represent local and historical features of the city and its inhabitants. At the same time, the relevance of the problem is related to the insufficient systematization of data and information resources along with the constant development of tools for diagnosis and assessment of potential changes when working with historical buildings according to their characteristics. The main modern requirements for energy-efficient renovation of historical buildings, as well as the stages of analysis of the characteristics of historical buildings, and the further formation of the renovation strategy and the selection of appropriate methods and measures are considered. Considered limitations and features of the renovation of historic buildings (general engineering limitations due to the historical context, specific characteristics of a specific building, design limitations).

Thermal analysis of the window-wall interface for renovation of historical buildings

Due to the long time since their construction, some old buildings have experienced a decline in performance and do not meet contemporary requirements. Retrofitting methods, as opposed to demolition and reconstruction, are considered a more cost-effective and energy-efficient approach, particularly applicable to historical buildings with conservation significance. Exterior windows account for a significant amount of heat loss within the building envelope, but it is a challenge to improve its performance while retaining the historical appearance of the building when retrofitting. In this paper, a new design of the window-wall interface structure was proposed, which facilitated the incorporation of additional thermal insulation materials and mitigated the thermal bridge effect at the joint between the window frame and the wall. Comparative analysis with existing window-wall interface structures revealed the superior thermal performance of the proposed structure, with less heat transfer as well as smaller surfaces at risk of condensation. The structure was first implemented in a renovation project in Nanjing, providing an innovative approach for future exterior window renovations of historical buildings.

Enhanced Documentation and Evaluation of Grouting Process, through the Fusion of Non-Destructive Testing and Evaluation Information—The Case Study of the Katholikon of the Monastery of Panagia Varnakova

The restoration of historic buildings and structures involves a wide range of scientific and technical fields. The grouting process is among an array of rehabilitation and preservation interventions and aims to homogenize the structure after the implementation of strengthening measures. The process can provide important information regarding the state of preservation of the examined structure and correlate the progress of the process with the pathology of the monument. To achieve this, the analysis of typical raw grouting data is progressively fused with additional information from the diagnostic studies, non-destructive testing, geospatial information, and from the calculation and analysis of grouting indices. The restoration project of the Katholikon of the Monastery of Panagia Varnakova in Fokida, Greece was selected as the case study, due to its large scale and the severe earthquake damage it has sustained, which has necessitated comprehensive strengthening interventions and extensive grouting. The implementation of an integrated methodological approach validated the enhanced level of co-analysis, revealing information that is not readily deduced from a typical approach. Selected sub-areas of the Katholikon are presented, demonstrating how the observed pathology can be correlated with the results of the grouting process, while incorporating 3D data, and findings from structural and non-destructive analyses.

Digital Restoration of Historical Buildings by Integrating 3D PC Reconstruction and GAN Algorithm

Historical architecture is an important carrier of cultural and historical heritage in a country and region, and its protection and restoration work plays a crucial role in the inheritance of cultural heritage. However, the damage and destruction of buildings urgently need to be repaired due to the ancient age of historical buildings and the influence of natural environment and human factors. Therefore, an artificial intelligence repair technology based on three-dimensional (3D) point cloud reconstruction and generative adversarial networks was proposed to improve the precision and efficiency of repair work. Firstly, in-depth research on the principles and algorithms of 3D point cloud data processing and generative adversarial networks should be conducted. Secondly, a digital restoration framework was constructed by combining these two artificial intelligence technologies to achieve precise and efficient restoration of historical buildings through continuous adversarial learning processes. The experimental results showed that the errors in the restoration of palace buildings, defense walls, pagodas, altars, temples, and mausoleums were 0.17, 0.12, 0.13, 0.11, and 0.09, respectively. The technique can significantly reduce the error while maintaining the high precision repair effect. This technology with artificial intelligence as the core has excellent accuracy and stability in the digital restoration. It provides a new technical means for the digital restoration of historical buildings and has important practical significance for the protection of cultural heritage.

Study on the shear properties of masonry pagoda mortar and its influencing factors

Mortar stands as one of the fundamental components in masonry construction, significantly enriching the global cultural heritage, particularly evident in ancient masonry structures. In this paper, the improvements of shear strength of mortar were studied, based on the original formulation material of sticky-rice lime mortar. The study considered the effect of different aggregates and additives on the shear strength of mortar, the shear tests and scanning electron microscopy were employed to analyze the shear strength index and microscopic shear basis of the mortar. The results showed that 2 wt% Na-SiO2 significantly enhanced the shear strength of the mortar. Furthermore, the adhesion and frictional resistance between fiber and lime played a crucial role in enhancing the mortar's shear resistance. Incorporating a 0.5 wt% fiber additive not only effectively improved the mortar's brittleness but also acted as a deterrent to crack formation. Compared to pure lime mortar, the mixture of sand and clay aggregate exhibited a larger capacity at the same volume. This mortar also showcased better plasticity and ductility, making it more suitable for structures with significant shear deformation. These analytical findings provide valuable insights for modifying mortars in the restoration of historical buildings.

Green Building Assessment Model for Historic Buildings of Turkey

Grave structures are architectural works reflecting the cultural accumulation, continuity and political power of societies.  In the context of sustainability, while "green building" certification systems are developing in building productions in the world, new guidelines are also being created. Of course, new guidelines are also being developed on the certification as green buildings within the scope of the protection and restoration of historical buildings that should be specially considered. In this study, it is aimed to create a model that will allow the historical buildings in Turkey to be evaluated in the context of “the green building” concept. With this model, it is considered that historical building conservation practices will contribute positively to the works of restorers in making those heritage sites more environmentally friendly and sustainable. For the model designed to evaluate historical buildings within the scope of green buildings, historical buildings were handled under 3 groups: a) 1st Group Historical Buildings, b) 2nd Group Historical Buildings and c) Reconstructed Historical Buildings. As creating the designed model, GBC-Italy system criteria were taken as the basis. The criteria were carried out by conducting a questionnaire with experts in this field. Importance of the relevant evaluation criteria in the scoring system were determined by using the AHP method. As a result of the analyzes and calculations, the accuracy of the scoring was confirmed. As historical buildings are evaluated according to the conditions of their periods, it is obvious that they are sustainable buildings. Naturally, nowadays to be able to preserve historical buildings for the future generations in a proper way is usually ensured by giving them a new function. The requirements of the new functions given to create the necessary equipment to provide today's comfort conditions in historical buildings naturally change the sustainable characteristics of the historical heritage. This evaluation system, designed to preserve the green building characteristics of historical buildings and to ensure their sustainability with their new functions, will be an important guide.

Production of environmentally-friendly, high-strength repair mortar for the restoration of historical buildings

In this study, repair mortars with artificial and natural pozzolan additives were produced for the restoration of historical buildings. Class C fly ash, an artificial pozzolan and zeolite the natural pozzolan, were substituted into these lime-based mortars. Two different aggregate types were used in the preparation of the mortars: natural river sand and crushed brick. A total of 18 batches of mortars were produced, two of which were reference batches. In the first group of batches, fly ash, which is the major pozzolan, was tested in both aggregate groups in 20%, 40%, and 60% ratios of lime substitution. In the second group of batches, fly ash and zeolite were used in different proportions as lime substitution. In the reference series, air lime was used alone. At the end of the 28, 56, and 90 days curing period, mechanical, physical properties, and phase composition of the mortars were determined. When the pozzolan-added mortars were compared with the reference mortars, it was observed that pozzolans provided significant improvements in the physical and mechanical properties of the repair mortars. While significant improvements were observed in the physical properties of the mortars where fly ash was used as the only pozzolan, mechanical properties were better in the mortars with zeolite.

Ultrasonic Characterization of Polymer Based Sille Stone Powder Composite Mortars

The Sille stone mined in the Sille Region of Konya province in Türkiye, is an andesitic rock. This stone is a material used in the construction of traditional and modern buildings. The Sille stone is cut while being used in buildings. The Sille stone powder (SSP) is formed during this cutting process. The SSPs cause environmental pollution. Therefore, this study was carried out to produce durable and eco-friendly new restoration mortars from the SSP that can be used in the restoration of historical buildings. The SSP composites were prepared by contributing SSP into epoxy and polyester resins in varied ratios such as 60‒75 wt.%. The effect of resin types and SSP contribution ratios on the elastic properties of epoxy resin (ER)/SSP and polyester resin (PR)/SSP composites was investigated by the ultrasonic pulse-echo method. Additionally, the morphology of these composites was investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Experimental results figured out that both longitudinal and shear wave velocity values of the PR/SSP composites were higher than of the ER/SSP composites. Furthermore, a linear increase was observed in the elastic properties of obtained composites with the increasing amounts of SSP.

Archaeometric characterization and restoration proposal for filling mortars of Oshki (Öşvank) church

In order to ensure the sustainability of cultural, historical and architectural heritage, preserving and restoring historical buildings and transferring them to future generations is one of the important issues of today. Restoration decisions regarding the repairs of historical buildings are of great importance in this context. Developing correct intervention decisions requires the thorough analysis of the structure, the determination of the structural and material properties meticulously, and the use the most appropriate materials for repairing it. However, only physical and chemical analyses are not sufficient to determine material properties of historical buildings; therefore, archaeometric analyses are needed to determine them more appropriately. In this study, it is aimed to determine the components and characteristics of the filling mortars of Oshki (Öşvank) Church, one of the most magnificent structures of the Eastern Anatolia region, in order to preserve the masonry structure and guide the restoration studies in the light of archaeometric analyses. The raw material properties of the samples taken from the filling mortars of the church were determined by the physical, chemical and petrographic analyses. As a result of the analyses, the aggregate-binding properties of Oshki Church filler mortars were determined. It was revealed that the aggregate content was determined as petrographic, lime was used as a binder and all samples contained pozzolan whereas no cement was used in any of the samples, and the samples did not contain marble rice/powder and organic additives like oil, protein etc. It has also been observed that the aggregate in the mortar content is compatible with the geological formations of near surrounding of the church. In this context, this study emphasizes the importance of archaeometric analysis in restoration of historical buildings. Moreover, differing from other studies in the literature, this study proposes mortar recipe to be used in the restoration of the church, which can pioneer to future studies in the field of architectural restoration.

Typological evolution of temporary accommodation facilities

Temporary accommodation facilities are largely a reflection of socio-economic processes in the middle of society at a certain stage of its existence. The structure of modern hotels bears the imprint of historical prototypes that were formed in countries with different cultural, social, and architectural traditions. Studying the historical evolution of such institutions makes it possible to determine certain historical stages of their formation, identify modern development prospects and outline futuristic directions for their modernization. The article examines the historical evolution of temporary accommodation facilities, the formation and development of their typology. The peculiarities of the architectural and planning organization of hotel establishments of different periods of construction are established. The impact of socio-economic factors on the formation of temporary accommodation facilities at various stages of human development is monitored. The main stages of the development of hotels are highlighted: the ancient period, the Middle Ages, modern times, the formation of the concept of "hotel" at the turn of the 19th-20th centuries.  Selected periods of rapid development: the beginning of the 20th century up to the period of the world economic crisis of the 1930s; 1950-60 (the end of World War II, the formation of mass tourism); 1980s - the beginning of the 21st century (the flourishing of international tourism); 2020 - to the present days (the impact of the global pandemic Сovid-19, the war in Ukraine, the general global economic recession). During the last decades, taking into account the climatic, ecological, man-made and socio-political challenges, the hotel business has become characterized by: a certain departure from "internationalization" in the architectural and design solutions of hotel establishments; appeal to national cultural traditions; specialization of hotels; expansion of the network of institutions of medium-low level of comfort; the direction of ecological and energy-efficient construction; the use of "theatrical effects" and futurism in the design of hotel interiors and exteriors; spread of eco-hotels, "green tourism" facilities, "capsule hotels". The article deals with the issues of architectural and figurative transformation of buildings during the reconstruction of historical industrial enterprises (mid-eighteenth century - first half of the XX century). The main principles for the implementation of such a transformation are determined: ensuring urban integrity; preservation of the historical image of industrial architecture; nuances in their general architectural and spatial organization (symbiosis with the environment); contrast between old and new; compliance with national and regional cultural traditions; environmentally friendly solutions. Examples of the application of these principles in the world practice of the reconstruction of industrial buildings for various public functions are analyzed. Techniques that allow to implement these principles in the renovation of historical buildings are defined. These methods include: conservation and restoration of the characteristic elements of industrial architecture; reuse of authentic materials and designs; the inclusion of industrial equipment in the interiors and exteriors of objects of reconstruction; the use of forms, materials, structures, furniture - contrasting with the primary industrial structure while ensuring symbiosis with the environment due to the nuanced solution of the overall composition, the delicate inclusion of new elements, the preservation of rhythmic patterns, the use of building and finishing materials, elements of architectural «camouflage» (grids, perforations, glazing, openwork metal structures, etc.); «absorption» of old buildings or their parts by new structures. In addition, an accentuated appeal to the characteristic features of the national cultural traditions of the construction region, the use of local building and finishing materials, forms, structures, the use of local ornaments, patterns, objects of arts and crafts is proposed. It is recommended to use environmentally friendly materials, landscaping elements in the interiors and exteriors of buildings, the formation of a building area using the natural landscape along with the inclusion of industrial elements of industrial architecture.

How to improve the integrity and sustainability of historic architectural complexes and their environments in modern urban planning--an example from the "Wenming Street" historic district renovation project in Kunming

Historic buildings are the bearers of human civilization. Kunming, a famous historical and cultural city in China, has numerous historical and cultural heritages and a diverse and prosperous historical and cultural background. This study takes the renovation project of the historic district of Wenming Street in Kunming as the research object and proposes a holistic, multi-dimensional, and multi-factor planning and renovation method that should focus on the district in the conservation and renovation of historic buildings through the hierarchical analysis method. Through expert scoring and weighting analysis, questionnaires, and index scores, it is found that there is a lack of "spirit of place" and insufficient expression of non-material elements in the renovation of the historic district. This study aims to realize the integration of the historic environment with the needs of modern life using a monistic logic and to provide theoretical reference and practical guidance for the conservation, renovation, and sustainable development of historic buildings and the historic environment.

Point Cloud-Based Historical Building Information Modeling (H-BIM) in Urban Heritage Documentation Studies

Integrating building information modeling (BIM) technology into historical and cultural heritage structures has resulted in historic building information modeling (H-BIM), an effective method for managing and documenting invaluable historical artifacts. H-BIM has the potential to aid with the design, restoration, and maintenance activities of historical buildings by properly integrating parametric data and deliberately assessing semantic information, thus progressing the 3D model’s performance. H-BIM also aims to conduct cultural heritage (CH) studies in a systematic manner by combining 3D modeling techniques and information management. The first step in this process is to conduct a suitable geomatic survey to build accurate 3D models. The most efficient modeling method is to employ 3D point cloud data that are acquired using the terrestrial laser scanning method. This study proposes a manual modeling strategy for urban historical buildings that falls within the scope of the H-BIM methodology. The proposed modeling strategy follows a workflow that inserts point cloud data into the BIM environment in order to create a 3D urban cultural heritage model using ontologies applied with the H-BIM methodology. With this objective in mind, the H-BIM model development platform Revit was used to model the object elements of the inheritance structure in 3D and save them in the BIM library. It is very important to model building elements separately in 3D modeling studies. The resulting BIM product sheds light on fundamental data for the future planning, design, operation, and maintenance processes of the building. Users can obtain data suitable for H-BIM by adding graphical and non-graphical data.

ROMANIA AS A DESTINATION FOR CULTURAL AND HERITAGE TOURISM

Romania possesses a consistent heritage including cultural, historical and folkloric resources with a high potential for tourism valorization. Despite of this valuable heritage, the development of cultural tourism is still limited and more actions are needed to be undertaken for a better promotion and attraction of tourist flows in the most important cultural areas. Due to this potential and to recent massive operations of restoration and renovation of historical buildings, but also due to the improvement of services and education, Romania has succeeded to improve its supply for heritage tourism. In this paper we analyze the main issues related to the competitiveness of Romania as a cultural destination, we assess its place among other countries in Central and Eastern Europe, but also which were the recent developments on this topic. A detailed investigation has been performed regarding the main attractions and destinations for heritage tourism in Romania, including the cultural and intangible cultural heritage sites from Romania included on the UNESCO World Heritage list. Our conclusions go to the actions necessary for improving Romania’ s place on the market of cultural and heritage tourism, such as: improvements in the infrastructure for increasing the accessibility of the most important destinations, a more focused vision and enhanced strategy for the development and management of tourist attractions, more efficient actions for internal and international promotion, the adoption of appropriate management and marketing tools to make these objectives known, especially to international tourists etc.

The paradigmatic basis of architectural heritage management in the context of the modern philosophy of cultural property conservation

Conservation of cultural property has been defined as all actions aimed at safeguarding cultural property for the future in order to study, record, retain and restore the culturally significant qualities of the object, site or building with the least possible intervention. Architectural conservation constitutes actions that address the repair, restoration, maintenance and display of historic buildings, enclaves of buildings and sites, as well as their associated accoutrements, such as furnishings and fittings. These actions whether conducted on individual buildings or groups of buildings represent investments in the future of such sites. Such regenerative action at historic buildings and sites usually increases values of adjacent properties and local economic conditions as well. Architectural conservation is widely regarded as the predominant activity within the larger and more diverse field of cultural heritage conservation, which is also referred to as cultural heritage (or resource) management. This field is concerned with the documentation and preservation of all forms of human culture, including tangible artifacts such as architecture, archaeological sites, cultural landscapes, arts and crafts, and other objects of material culture. Architectural restoration and rehabilitation offers new practical, educational and growth stimulus possibilities. In addition, cultural heritage conservation addresses intangible manifestations of human activity, including existing manners and customs (folkways); spiritual practices; and musical, craft and cuisine traditions of indigenous populations, all of which are considered living heritage. The general purview of heritage conservation practice is ever expanding which makes the field both dynamic and open to new participants who bring fresh talent and perspectives to the task. As organized heritage conservation practice expands with each passing year formerly disparate facts and representations of history take on new meaning and significance. In relation to this, both cultural and economic values at heritage sites constantly change. Changes posed by nature and humans on physical cultural heritage ensure constant change as well.

A new proposed semi-quantitative method for the organic additives analysis in traditional lime mortar

To improve the performance of lime mortar, ancient craftsmen often added various additives to mortars, including inorganic and organic materials. The analysis of mortar additives plays an important role in the conservation and restoration of historical buildings. However, it is quite difficult to accurately identify the species of additives. This paper proposed a series of semi-quantitative analytical procedures to identify the organic additives in ancient lime mortars. By using reagents such as phenolphthalein, periodic acid, acetylacetone, anthrone, bicinchoninic acid (BCA), iodine-potassium iodide, chloramine T, etc., organic additives such as triglyceride, soluble sugar, starch, and protein (including blood, gelatine, and other unknown proteins) remaining in ancient lime mortar were accurately detected, respectively. The linear relationship of the standard curve was significant, and the detection limits for the target additives were below 7 µg/mL. The process is easy to operate within 6 h, and it is suitable for rapid in-situ testing.

<p><em>The physical change of Sarinah in 2022 captivates the residents of Jakarta. In the previous era, this building had lost its glory due to the lack of focused planning for renovations, especially when Jakarta's development accelerated with the presence of many new modern buildings. This writing uses a qualitative descriptive method with a historical approach. The analysis of architectural typology on the building facade is conducted by exploring the history to find out the origin of events, functions, and simple forms of a building. The aim is to provide an overview of the importance of giving more attention to the renovation of historic buildings. Changes in building facades can show a different identity from one urban space related to the political and socio-cultural context. Determination of cultural heritage status provides benefits for its preservation by increasing the potential of buildings to revive memories and the continuity of urban modernism. </em></p>
